Chapter Eighteen

“Annaliese has told me pretty much what happened that day, but I’ll bet you three can fill in a lot of details,” I said. “So, get started.”

It was later that day and Handy was sitting at my bedside. Wash and Doc were on a bench at the foot of the bed.

“What’s the last thing you remember?” asked Handy.

“I remember the sound of a rattlesnake and then the world sort of exploded,” I said, and after I thought for a while I continued. “I remember falling but I don’t remember hitting the ground. After that, nothing till I woke up here.”

“Well, I guess I’ll start, and you fellows can jump in when I get to where you fit,” said Handy, looking around at the others. They nodded and he began.

“I was a couple of yards behind you when we heard the rattler,” he said. “Rusty reared, and when he came down, apparently his left forehoof came down on some loose ground and he fell. You pushed off and away, so he didn’t roll on you. I watched you roll down the hill and was off my horse by the time you fetched up against a tree near the bottom. When I got down there you were awake but groggy. You asked for a drink of water and by the time I got to the creek and back, Wash and Doc were there, and you had passed out.” He stopped and looked at Doc who nodded and picked up the narrative.

“It was easy to see where you had broken bones and I splinted the arm with a couple of saplings. The ankle break was something I’d never handled before, so I just tried to keep you from moving it any more than necessary. Since Wash knew Doctor Crawford, we decided he should ride down to Salt Lake, get the doctor, and bring a wagon up the canyon to carry you into town. Handy built a fire and with some hot water, I cleaned and bandaged you as best I could. Since we couldn’t figure how to get you back up the hill, we got you onto Handy’s back and he carried you down to a place where the trail ran close to the creek. It was three hours before Wash got back with the doctor and Annaliese and then another two hours to get you down here and into that bed.”

“You say you knew the doctor?” I asked Wash.

He nodded, “Sarah and the kids spend the winter with the Crawfords sometimes. I rode down here with them one winter and stayed to help out around the place.”

“I knew I’d heard that name before but couldn’t remember where,” I said. “Sarah mentioned him before we left there, didn’t she?”

He nodded. “Handy got a letter from them the other day and they’re planning to come down around October first or so,” said Wash. “I think he’s been writing to Rebecca every day since we got here, encouraging them to come early this year. Just so they could see you, of course.
